4 reviews for Old PC Games, 4.3 stars: “I play old PC game weekly and its totally amazing, couldn't live without it ever. I like the memories they bring me”, “Why pay to play (rent) old games when you can use lovefilm to rent new games! Would not recommend.”. Abandonia is an index of abandonware 'dedicated to classic DOS games.' The run around I got from GOG was horrendous and finally I just gave up and decided some reviews, tell my friends etc etc. They don't realize how much this stuff will cost them. Good Old Games is an online game download service that serves a niche market: people looking for classic PC games. We take a look at this service and find out how it works.

Service Overview
Good Old Games (GoG) does not serve the same market as Steam or Direct2Drive; it has appeal to people looking for classic PC games from about 1995 to several years ago.

Most of the games are $5.99 – $9.99 and downloadable directly through a web browser or the company’s download application. All the games are packaged in GoG’s custom installer to ensure compatibility with Vista and XP (Windows 7 compatibility is being worked on).
The games are completely DRM-free and can be played offline. As an added bonus, games come with extras such as guides/walkthroughs, soundtracks, artwork, manuals and other media if available. I like this inclusion a lot since such items can have sentimental value.
Now let’s take a closer look at the service.

Discount casino gear coupon. Good Old Games’ online store (above left) is easy to browse. The main page lists highest rated and new releases for various game genres (FPS, RPG, etc.) and overall bestsellers.
The GoG catalogue (above right) allows for more detailed browsing by genre, user rating, price, availability and publisher. There is a modest collection of games; I noticed several large publishers were absent such as Take-Two. There are plenty of classics for download, however, such as the original Unreal Tournament, Fallout, and so on.
Purchasing and Downloading Games
Clicking on the “Download Now” button on a game’s page goes to the quick-order screen (above left). This is a one-step process: simply enter payment information and submit.
Games show up in the user’s “My Games” tab in their account page (above right) once purchased. Games can be rearranged by clicking and dragging; a list view is also available.
There are two methods of downloading games: the first is through the web browser and the second is through Good Old Games’ download application.
Using the Good Old Games downloader is the preferred method; it has the ability to pick up where it left off if the Internet connection drops out while downloading. The GoG downloader is very compact and only a few megabytes in size; its sole functionality is downloading games. Multiple games can be queued for downloading.
I received excellent download rates; I averaged between 1.2-1.5MB/s, as fast as I can expect from my Internet connection.
Game Installation
While new games are designed to work with modern operating systems, older games obviously were not. Good Old Games reprograms the installers of new games so they are compatible with Windows XP and Vista; Windows 7 compatibility is being worked on.
Old Games Legit
I experienced no issues installing or playing games. The installation is a two-click process and launching games is as simple as launching any other program.
Community
Good Old Games has a community forum where users can interact and discuss games and other topics. There are forums for every game GoG sells as well as a general discussion forum. The forum is moderately active; the replies to the first page of threads ranged from a few minutes minutes old to posts made a few hours ago.
Good Old Games does not offer more in-depth social networking like Steam or Impulse with a friends list and so on. This can be a pro or a con; the social networking market is so saturated that whether GoG has one or not is unlikely to deter customers.
Conclusion
Good Old Games is a simple and well-executed game download service. Searching for and purchasing games is straightforward; downloading games is quick. The company creates a custom installer for games so they are compatible with Windows XP and Vista (compatibility with 7 is coming). I like how the games are DRM-free and there is no need to connect to an online account to play them.

GoG has an online forum but does not offer more in-depth social networking like Steam or Impulse. I am not taking many points off for this, because the social networking market is so saturated.
